Mrs. Starke's Classroom Policies

Rules/Expectations

This is what I expect of you as a student in my class(es).

  1. Be prepared for class. Bring reading book, free reading book and binder of papers. Be ready to read, read, read.
  2. Follow directions.  Listen and be attentive.
  3. Do not talk without permission.  Please raise your hand before speaking.  It is extremely rude to interrupt others who are speaking or reading as instructed.
  4. Participate.  You are as much a part of this class as anyone else.  Be involved and ask questions when you do not understand.
  5. Respect others.  If something doesn’t belong to you, don’t bother it.  Use language that shows respect. Foul language and put downs will not be tolerated as they are bullying behaviors.  I do write detentions for this.
  6. Use manners.  Walk in and out of the classroom. Excuse me and please and thank you are good words to use when speaking.

Tardies

I follow the school policy on make-up work.  When you are absent from school for any reason, YOU, the student, are responsible for asking the teachers what you missed.  Missed tests or quizzes may need to be taken after school so you don’t miss more class time.  You have one day per day missed to make up the work without it being considered late.  If there are special circumstances, have your parent contact me to see what we can work out.

Assignments

For reading there will be limited homework. When assignments are given they should:

  1. Be on white paper with blue/black ink or pencil and easy to read.  I can’t grade what I can’t read.
  2. Not copied. Copied work will not be counted and parents/principal will be notified.  We want to know what you can do, not someone else.

Late Work

I follow the school policy on late work.  For an assignment to be late, it is turned in after the due class period.  You are allowed one late assignment per quarter in which you lose no points.  After that one, each late paper is docked 40%. (For instance, if you turn in a paper late and would have gotten an 100% (A) on it, I have to record 60% (D-)). According to the handbook, late work doesn't have to be accepted and can receive a 0 grade.

Tests

You, the student, will be given at least four days notice of a test. You are responsible for studying for it. Review information given to you in class (notes, assignments, etc.) A test cannot be retaken to see if you can get a better grade.
